How to Plan Ayodhya Varanasi Prayagraj Trip - Route, Itinerary & Complete Guide
Quick Answer

Plan an Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Prayagraj trip in the order Ayodhya → Prayagraj → Varanasi. This avoids backtracking and ends in a city with a major airport. The total loop is roughly 530–540 km and takes 4 to 6 days. Key distances: Ayodhya to Prayagraj is ~170 km (4–5 hours), and Prayagraj to Varanasi is ~125 km (2.5–3 hours). Book the free Sugam Darshan e-pass for Ram Mandir on online.srjbtkshetra.org. Package costs start from ₹8,499 per person for a 3N/4D group tour. The best season is October to March. For a complete circuit package with cab, hotel, and darshan assistance, contact Rohit at 7078723132 or visit tripmybharat.com.

Quick Enquiry

Planning an Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Prayagraj trip comes down to one decision: the order you visit them in. These three cities sit on a single road corridor in eastern Uttar Pradesh, and the most efficient route is a straight line — Ayodhya first, Prayagraj in the middle, Varanasi last. Done this way, the circuit takes 4 to 6 days, with each leg a manageable 3–4 hour drive.

Namaste. I am Rohit, a local guide from Mathura Vrindavan. I have been helping pilgrims for the past 8 years. I have planned this circuit for families, solo travellers, and NRI groups, and I have seen the same mistake repeated: people pick the cities they want, but they do not think about the road between them. The result is a trip with an 8-hour drive in the middle and no energy left for darshan.

This guide gives you the correct route, the distances between each city, a realistic 5-day itinerary, the temple timings you need to plan around, and the honest cost of doing it properly.

Why Route Order Matters More Than the City List

Most people search for "Varanasi Ayodhya Prayagraj" because Varanasi is the most famous. But the most efficient travel sequence is the reverse.

Think of the three cities as points on a line, not a triangle. Ayodhya lies to the north, Prayagraj to the south-west, and Varanasi to the south-east. Travelling Ayodhya → Prayagraj → Varanasi means you never double back. You end in a city with a large airport and railway junction, which makes departure easy.

If you start in Varanasi and go to Ayodhya first, you add 200–220 km of driving before you have even seen Prayagraj. That is a full day lost.

The Two Ways to Do It

Route Total Distance Driving Days Verdict
Ayodhya → Prayagraj → Varanasi ~530–540 km 3 Efficient — recommended
Varanasi → Ayodhya → Prayagraj → Varanasi ~530 km (loop) 3 Works if you are based in Varanasi
Varanasi → Prayagraj → Ayodhya → Varanasi ~540 km (loop) 3 Also efficient, ends back in Varanasi

My recommendation: If you are flying into Delhi or Lucknow, start in Ayodhya. If you are flying into Varanasi, do the loop and return to Varanasi. Both work. What does not work is a sequence that forces an 8–9 hour drive between any two of these three cities.

We sequence every itinerary to minimise driving and maximise darshan time. Contact +91 7078723132

Inter-City Distance and Travel Time

Route Distance Road Time Notes
Lucknow → Ayodhya ~140 km ~3 hours Useful if your flight lands at Lucknow
Ayodhya → Prayagraj ~170 km 4–5 hours The main leg of the circuit
Prayagraj → Varanasi ~125 km 2.5–3 hours Highway drive across the Ganga plains
Ayodhya → Varanasi (direct) ~200–220 km 4–5 hours If you skip Prayagraj
Varanasi → Sarnath ~10 km ~30 minutes Half-day excursion

Train Options

Trains connect the cities, but they are not always faster than a cab once you factor in station transfers.

Route Train Time Notes
Ayodhya → Varanasi 2h 40m (fastest) to 4h 46m (average) ~200 km by rail
Prayagraj → Varanasi 1h 50m (fastest) to 2h 15m (average) ~134 km by rail

The honest picture: A private cab is the most practical way to cover this circuit. Trains connect the cities, but the last-mile temple access, the luggage handling, and the afternoon temple closures make a cab the better choice for pilgrims.

We provide hill-experienced drivers and temple-approach vehicles for the full circuit. Contact +91 7078723132

The 5-Day Itinerary: Ayodhya → Prayagraj → Varanasi

This is the realistic plan. It gives each city its own day, with travel buffers and darshan windows built in.

Evening Saryu Aarti at Ram Ki Paidi

Time Plan
Early Morning Ram Mandir darshan (Sugam Darshan pass; gates open ~6:00 AM)

Day 3: Ayodhya → Prayagraj

Time Plan
Morning Drive Ayodhya to Prayagraj (4–5 hours)
Afternoon Triveni Sangam — boat ride and holy dip
Late Afternoon Lete Hanuman Ji Temple (the reclining Hanuman)
Evening Anand Bhavan (if time permits); rest
Overnight Prayagraj

Day 4: Prayagraj → Varanasi

Time Plan
Early Morning Optional second Sangam snan at sunrise
Morning Drive Prayagraj to Varanasi (2.5–3 hours)

What this plan achieves: Three cities, three darshan windows, no backtracking, and enough buffer for the afternoon temple closures and the road travel.

Practical Tips for the Circuit

  • Start early every day. Temples are calmest in the morning, and the afternoon closure (roughly 12:00 PM–2:00 PM) eats into your day if you have not planned around it.

  • Do not overplan travel days. The Ayodhya–Prayagraj leg is 4–5 hours. That is a full half-day of driving.

  • Book hotels near the main sites. It saves time and energy at the end of a long day.

  • Carry cash. Small shops and vendors may not accept digital payments.

  • Keep a buffer. Traffic near Ayodhya has grown with the rise in visitors.

  • Confirm temple rules before you go. Ram Mandir does not allow phones or electronics inside; lockers are provided outside.

  • Dress modestly. Shoulders and knees covered at all temples.

Final Words

Planning an Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Prayagraj trip is not complicated once you get the order right. Travel Ayodhya → Prayagraj → Varanasi. The distances are manageable — 170 km, then 125 km — and the full circuit fits into 4 to 6 days.

Ayodhya gives you Ram Lalla and the Saryu Aarti. Prayagraj gives you the Sangam. Varanasi gives you Kashi Vishwanath and the Ganga Aarti. Three cities, one continuous road, and no wasted hours.

Do not try to do it in two days. Do not route yourself through an 8-hour drive. And do not skip the morning darshan windows — they are the calmest hours of the day.

Jai Shri Ram. Har Har Mahadev.

Kashi Panchkroshi Yatra – Route, Padavs & Complete Guide

Quick Answer: The Kashi Panchkroshi Yatra is an 88.5 km circumambulation of the sacred boundary of Varanasi, traditionally walked over 5 days with overnight halts at five historic Padavs — Kardameshwar, Bhimchandi, Rameshwar, Shivpur, and Kapildhara. It begins and ends at Manikarnika Ghat, where pilgrims take a holy dip and a sankalp (vow) before starting. The yatra is completely free and open year-round. The most auspicious periods are Adhika Maas, Kartik, and Maha Shivaratri. For those who cannot walk, the entire circuit can be completed in a single day by car (8–10 hours, from ₹2,600). Nag Nathaiya & Ramnagar Ramleela – The 31-Day Festival Guide

Quick Answer: Varanasi’s autumn season is defined by two extraordinary living traditions. The Ramnagar Ramleela is a 31-night open-air enactment of the Ramcharitmanas, running from Anant Chaturdashi (September 24, 2026) to Vijayadashami (October 20, 2026) across the town of Ramnagar. Separately, Nag Nathaiya is a single-afternoon river spectacle at Tulsi Ghat on Friday, 13 November 2026, re-enacting Krishna’s victory over the serpent Kaliya. Both are completely free to attend. This guide explains the 31-day Ramleela cycle, the Nag Nathaiya ritual, and how to experience both like a local. Contact Rohit at 7078723132 for guided visits, boat arrangements, and festival-week logistics.
