Varanasi to Prayagraj to Ayodhya Road Trip Guide: The Sacred UP Triangle

By Rohit•15 Oct 2026
Varanasi to Prayagraj to Ayodhya Road Trip Guide: The Sacred UP Triangle
Quick Answer

A Varanasi to Prayagraj to Ayodhya road trip covers roughly 285 km on the most direct route, though many travellers take the longer Varanasi–Ayodhya leg first. The most efficient sequencing is Varanasi → Prayagraj (about 120 km, 2.5 hours) and then Prayagraj → Ayodhya (about 165 km, 3.5 to 4.5 hours) . The roads are flat, four-lane national highways for most of the way, with no hills and no bad stretches . A comfortable trip takes 4 to 5 days to cover all three cities without rushing. A private cab for the full circuit costs roughly ₹9,900 for a sedan over three days . Contact Rohit at 7078723132 for cab booking and darshan assistance.

Quick Enquiry

Namaste. I am Rohit, a guide. I have been helping pilgrims for the past 8 years. Every week, I meet travellers who want to cover Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Ayodhya in one trip. These three cities form a sacred triangle in Uttar Pradesh — Kashi, the city of Lord Shiva; Prayagraj, the site of the Triveni Sangam; and Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama.

Most pilgrims arrive in Varanasi by train or flight, want Ayodhya for the Ram Mandir, and Prayagraj for the Sangam. The distances are manageable. The roads are good. And with the right planning, the journey itself becomes part of the pilgrimage.

This guide covers everything you need to know about the Varanasi–Prayagraj–Ayodhya road trip — the routes, the distances, the stops, the best order, and the practical tips that make your journey smooth and meaningful.

Let us begin.

Which Order Should You Take?

The three cities sit at the corners of a triangle. You can travel them in either direction. But the most efficient order for most pilgrims is Varanasi → Prayagraj → Ayodhya or its reverse .

Why This Order Works:

  • Varanasi is the largest travel hub with the most flights and trains

  • Prayagraj sits between Varanasi and Ayodhya on the road map

  • The distances are balanced: 120 km, then 165 km, then 200 km back

The Reverse Order (Ayodhya First):

  • Better if you are arriving from Delhi or Lucknow

  • Ayodhya is closer to Delhi (630 km) than Varanasi (820 km)

  • You can start with Ram Mandir darshan and end with Ganga Aarti

My Recommendation: If you are flying into Varanasi, start there. If you are driving from Delhi, start with Ayodhya.

Leg 1 – Varanasi to Prayagraj

This is the shortest and easiest leg of the trip.

Detail Information
Distance 121–127 km
Route NH-19
Drive Time 2.5 to 3 hours
Tolls None (removed since 2024)
Best For Easy morning drive

The Route:

Varanasi → Sarnath bypass → Handia → Kara → Jhunsi → Prayagraj

What to See Along the Way:

  • Sarnath: If you have time, stop at Sarnath, where Buddha gave his first sermon. It is just 10 km from Varanasi.

  • Handia: A small town with good chai stops .

  • Kara: Midpoint with roadside dhabas .

Arriving in Prayagraj:

The taxi drops you directly at the Sangam ghat area. Trains drop at Prayagraj Junction, which is about 7 km from the Sangam .

What to Do in Prayagraj:

  • Triveni Sangam — the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati

  • Boat ride at the Sangam

  • Anand Bhavan (Nehru family home)

  • Khusro Bagh

  • Hanuman Mandir

Leg 2 – Prayagraj to Ayodhya

This is the longest leg of the trip, but the roads are good.

Detail Information

Drive Time 3.5 to 4.5 hours
Road Quality 2 to 4 lanes, generally good

  • Shringverpur: A sacred Ramayana site near the Prayagraj approach . This is where Lord Rama crossed the Ganga.

  • Sultanpur: Sitting on the banks of the Gomti River . Good for a tea break.

  • Faizabad: The last major town before Ayodhya. The last 50 km are the busiest, with pilgrim buses converging on the temple approach .

Arriving in Ayodhya:

The car drops you at the designated parking. The Ram Mandir, Hanuman Garhi, and Kanak Bhawan are on foot from there. The Saryu ghats are for the evening .

What to Do in Ayodhya:

  • Ram Mandir darshan

Leg 3 – Ayodhya to Varanasi (Return)

The return leg is the longest single drive, but it is still manageable.

Detail Information
Distance 200–219 km
Route Via Sultanpur and Jaunpur
Drive Time 4 to 5 hours
Best For A relaxed return with stops

The Route:

Ayodhya → Sultanpur → Jaunpur → Varanasi

What to See Along the Way:

  • Jaunpur: The old Shahi Bridge is worth a slow pass. The mosques of the Sharqi sultans are a short detour if history interests you .

Arriving Back in Varanasi:

If you have time before your flight or train, do the Kashi Vishwanath darshan and the Dashashwamedh Ganga Aarti .

Conclusion

The Varanasi–Prayagraj–Ayodhya road trip is one of the most meaningful journeys you can take in India. It connects the city of Lord Shiva, the confluence of sacred rivers, and the birthplace of Lord Rama. It is a journey through the heart of Hindu civilisation.

The roads are good. The distances are manageable. And with the right planning, the drive itself becomes part of the pilgrimage.

Start early each day. Take a tea halt. Stop at the sacred sites along the way. And when you arrive in each city, let the darshan do the rest.

This is the sacred triangle of Uttar Pradesh. This is Kashi, Prayagraj, and Ayodhya. This is an experience of a lifetime.

Jai Shri Ram. Har Har Mahadev.

Kashi Panchkroshi Yatra – Route, Padavs & Complete Guide

Quick Answer: The Kashi Panchkroshi Yatra is an 88.5 km circumambulation of the sacred boundary of Varanasi, traditionally walked over 5 days with overnight halts at five historic Padavs — Kardameshwar, Bhimchandi, Rameshwar, Shivpur, and Kapildhara. It begins and ends at Manikarnika Ghat, where pilgrims take a holy dip and a sankalp (vow) before starting. The yatra is completely free and open year-round. The most auspicious periods are Adhika Maas, Kartik, and Maha Shivaratri. For those who cannot walk, the entire circuit can be completed in a single day by car (8–10 hours, from ₹2,600). Nag Nathaiya & Ramnagar Ramleela – The 31-Day Festival Guide

Quick Answer: Varanasi’s autumn season is defined by two extraordinary living traditions. The Ramnagar Ramleela is a 31-night open-air enactment of the Ramcharitmanas, running from Anant Chaturdashi (September 24, 2026) to Vijayadashami (October 20, 2026) across the town of Ramnagar. Separately, Nag Nathaiya is a single-afternoon river spectacle at Tulsi Ghat on Friday, 13 November 2026, re-enacting Krishna’s victory over the serpent Kaliya. Both are completely free to attend. This guide explains the 31-day Ramleela cycle, the Nag Nathaiya ritual, and how to experience both like a local. Contact Rohit at 7078723132 for guided visits, boat arrangements, and festival-week logistics.
